The West Coast Trail

by John Wilmot

Raise a mug
and I'll tell you the tale

Of the seven who hiked
the West Coast Trail

There was Marty and Ed
and the Coles brothers, three

There was John Caruso
and the seventh was me

We loaded our packs
and flew to B.C.

To hike that beautiful
trail by the sea

In Port Alberni
we met Ed the Swede

A hiker from
that Viking breed

With no reservation
so, we agreed

To give him the one
that we didn't need

We also met
the England crew

Jon and Anna
Rich and Sarah, too

Four scabby students
with nothing better to do

Than to hike in Canada
for a month or two

From Pachina to Renfrew
we hiked the trail

Seeing eagles and sea lions
and plenty of whales

Over bridges and ladders
some looking quite frail

And cable car rides
hoping they wouldn't fail

If you want to know
what you need the most

When you hike that beautiful
trail by the coast

It isn't boots or tents
or stories of ghosts

It's good friends
and so, I raise a toast

To the twelve who hiked
the West Coast Trail

May the friendships we've made
NEVER FAIL
