Single Car Accident
On a bright sunny day in December we got a call to a motor vehicle accident on Yonge Street. Our predetermined response to an MVA is one Pumper unless there is something to indicate that it could be serious. For this call the dispatcher sent the Pumper and the Aerial. I was in the cab of the Aerial truck.
When we arrived we found a sport utility vehicle upside down by the side of the road. The driver was still inside so we stabalized the vehicle with some cribbing and one firefighter crawled in to assess his injuries. He was conscious and not hurt very badly. His seatbelt and airbag had done their job. He was unable to move but he was not pinned or trapped. The ambulance arrived and took over the patient care.
We could not get him out through the side doors so we opened the hatch at the back. We layed a long backboard in beside him and slid him onto it. Then we pulled him out of the vehicle and placed him on the strecher. Having rescued this victim I started looking around for the other vehicle but there wasn't any. The Captain got the story from the cops. It seems this guy had just had snow tires put on the truck. He was driving down Yonge Street when his wheel fell off (it sounds like a joke I once heard). He lost control and flipped over. I think that I'd be going back to talk to the mechanic who installed the tires. |
